“I freed thousands of slaves. I could have freed thousands more,
if they had known they were slaves.”

  2. The quote reminds me of a story I once heard of a Quaker family hiding some runaways. The bounty hunters arrived at their house to search for runaway slaves.
The woman of the house assured them there are no slaves on her property. The bounty hunters left because Quakers were known to never lie.
Later, when the runaways were safe in Canada, her children asked her how she could break the commandment not to bear false witness to which she replied, "I told the men the truth because there were no slaves under my roof!"
