Are you sure? Even New Testament-era Christians were identified as members of a cohesive, well-managed, hierarchical religious movement (an institution really) by the Jewish religious and Roman political authorities.
A cohesive, "well-managed", hierarchical religious institution sprang up rather quickly, I agree. But I am speaking of the time before this institution. When Christians were identified as such because they were following Jesus.
